About me

I received my M.Sc. and D.Sc. (Tech.) degrees in information engineering from the University of Oulu in 2010 and 2015, respectively. The research work conducted during my postgraduate studies has been recognized with two awards: the Five Year Highest Impact Award at BTAS 2016 and the IET Biometrics Premium (Best Paper) Award in 2013.

My general research interests include computer vision, audio and image processing, computational imaging, machine learning and pattern recognition. My particular focus has been on biometric authentication (face, iris, "talking-face" and bevioural), especially presentation attack detection (PAD) and multi-modal active (continuous) authentication on mobile devices. The work on PAD has also spanned my research topics into image and video forensics, including "deepfake" detection. I have also gained experience in conducting research and development in industry while working at Visidon Ltd - a company specialized in computer vision and computational imaging algorithms optimized for mobile and embedded platforms.

Currently, I'm working as a university lecturer at CMVS and conducting research in ICT 2023: Frontier AI Technologies 2021 project "Trustable faces: Face data integrity against digital and physical attacks (TrustFace)" funded by the Academy of Finland (PI: Prof. Guoying Zhao).

Leisure

When I am not spending quality time with my family, I am playing disc golf and kyykkä (Finnish skittles), or cycling. Music is one of the things that keeps me going. I am a vinyl junkie and a guitarist recovering from GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). I also enjoy good coffee and play a lot with different manual coffee preparation methods, especially V60 and Flair espresso.
